H. Luke McDermott

H. Luke McDermott, RHU, REBC, MHIS is the Founder, Owner/Principal of McDermott Company & Associates. Luke founded McDermott Company & Associates in 1988 after working for over 5 years for 3 different Insurance Carriers as an underwriter and sales representative. He has vast underwriting experience as an Underwriting Specialist with FHP of Utah and Manager of Group Underwriting with IHC Health Plans (now Selecthealth) and has been involved in underwriting, sales, and servicing of Small & Large Groups since 1983. His carrier alliances are strong and second to none in this area. Luke sits on, or has sat on, the Broker advisory boards of Altius Health Plans, Selecthealth, Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah, United HealthCare, and Dental Select. He has sat on the "Think Tank" committee at the State Insurance Department and has been a member of the Utah Association of Health Underwriters (UAHU) and National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) since 1987 actively participating for 10 years on its state board of directors as a committee chairman over education and special events from 1988 to 1998. More recently Luke has served as an officer and Board of Director Member for UAHU as Vice President 2005-2006, President Elect 2006-2007, President 2007-2008, and Immediate Past President 2008-2009. He is also a member of the National Association of Insurance Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and its local association. Luke takes employee benefits seriously and has devoted much time and effort to the betterment of the insurance industry testifying before the State of Utah Legislature and its sub-committees. H. Luke McDermott was born and raised in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School in 1976. Luke is 7th of 9 children. Luke was very active in Athletics Playing Basketball and Baseball in High School and at Dixie Jr. College and has the discipline and tenacity to get the job done fairly and squarely. Luke served an LDS church mission to Rome Italy and learned many lessons of life including the understanding of different cultures and peoples. Upon returning from his mission he married his high school sweetheart Bonnie Jo Isom and they have 5 children. Luke has given much community service as a coach in Soccer, Basketball and Baseball over a 15-year period of time. Luke graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in Accounting. He began his insurance career with FHP of Utah as an underwriting specialist preparing all pertinent information for new business and renewal underwriting. In June of 1984 he received his insurance license and worked in the new business department of FHP. He later worked for General Med in Southern California in the new business dept. as well. While there he was recruited back to Salt Lake by IHC Health Plans, Inc. to manage their Group Underwriting Dept. After 2 and 1/2 years with IHC Health Plans, Inc. he ventured out on his own and created his own insurance agency, McDermott Company & Associates in 1988. In August of 1988 Luke became a "Licensed Consultant" in the State of Utah. In October 1989 Luke received his RHU, Registered Health Underwriter, designation and was the 12th person in the State of Utah to do so. In March of 1991 Luke earned and received his REBC, Registered Employee Benefit Consultant, designation. He was the "first one" in Utah to hold both the RHU & REBC designations and was in the first graduating class of 103 in the United States. Luke is a member in good standing with the National Association of Health Underwriters, National Association of Insurance Financial Advisors, the Utah Association of Health Underwriters, and the Salt Lake Association of Financial Advisors.
